Experience Taiko – the Japanese Art of Drumming
We hold practices weekly at the LVKT dojo. Classes are led by Jennifer C. with the assistance of other performing members. Please view our events page or follow us on Facebook for upcoming enrollment dates.
Protégé Performance Class (beginner level)
Thursday 6:30pm – 8:00pm

Students in Kaminari’s Protégé class learn the fundamental skills to properly play taiko. Students will learn important drills vital to the mastery of performing taiko compositions. They will also learn dojo etiquette, taiko vocabulary, and taiko history. This is geared for ages 14+.
Apprentice Performance Class (intermediate level – by invitation only)

Apprentice Performers will receive more intense taiko instruction, especially with regards to LVKT’s performance style. This class emphasizes naname (slant drum) technique, odaiko (big drum) technique, and shime (small drum) technique. This class also prepares the students for auditioning into the Performance Class. If you are a visiting taiko player, or have recently moved to Las Vegas and would like to continue training, this is a great class to start in.
Performance Class (advanced level – by audition only)

Students who have successfully mastered the requisites of Kaminari Protégé and Apprentice class can choose to audition into the performance group. Here, students will continue to sharpen basic skills in addition to learning, rehearsing, and performing our group’s complete performance repertoire and new, developing taiko compositions. Kaminari Taiko performs regularly at both community and private events.
Friends and guests of Kaminari Taiko may sit in and watch this practice.
Tako Taiko – Taiko for Kids
Saturday 3:00pm – 4:30pm
Price: $40/month plus $10 fee for bachi and t-shirt

Tako Taiko, the first kids taiko group in Nevada, is aimed towards children ages 6-16. Students are taught basic drills with a fun twist. Students also learn about discipline, musical/visual artistry, team building, spacial awareness, and performance etiquette as they will also have the opportunity to perform.

All students that play taiko with us must pay an initial fee and become a member of the Japanese American Citizens League, LV Chapter. This is for insurance purposes just in case any accidents or injury happen while playing taiko.
